Wisconsin Local Legends
annual local legend award
At the WCA, we believe in celebrating the amazing climbers who make our community so special. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our annual Local Legend Award—a chance to honor the climbers who go above and beyond to support, inspire, and elevate the Wisconsin climbing scene.
Whether it's the mentor who’s always helping others, the route setter who makes every climb an adventure, or the person who's dedicated countless hours to improving our crags—this award is for those who make a real impact. We know there are so many local legends out there, and we can't wait to hear about them from YOU!
Why are we giving this award? We want to shine a spotlight on the climbers who aren't just strong on the wall, but strong contributors to our community. These are the people who make our climbing spaces more welcoming, safer, and more fun. Their dedication keeps the Wisconsin climbing scene thriving, and it’s time we give them the recognition they deserve!
How to Nominate
Do you know someone who fits the bill? Nominate them below! We’re looking for climbers who:
Inspire others to push their limits or take on new challenges
Contribute to the community, whether through route setting, organizing events, or mentoring
Go out of their way to make Wisconsin’s crags and climbing gyms better for everyone
We want to hear their story! Submit your nomination by filling out the form below and tell us why your nominee deserves to be this year’s Local Legend.
Each Local Legend award winner will receive a special shout-out from the WCA, a custom physical award from the WCA, and a permanent feature on our Local Legends webpage!
PAST LOCAL LEGEND WINNERS
2024 - DAVE GROTH
Has anyone here been sport climbing at Governor Dodge State Park, Hillbilly Hollow, or Grand Dad’s Bluff and thought to yourself “Huh, where did those shiny new bolts come from”? If you have, then you benefited from this man’s unique brand of “vigilante stewardship”. Dave has been a driving force in Wisconsin’s sport climbing scene. He bolted the first sport line in Wisconsin and went on to establish some of the best climbs in the state. He has provided a massive investment of his own time and resources. He’s provided mentorship to a number of young climbers concerning best bolting practices, route development, and more.
